Staying Healthy on Vacation

It’s vacation time! Time for a little rest and relaxation, time to forget about work, time to ditch the stresses in your life and just unwind. Vacations are a much needed break from everyday life and I think it is healthy to shut down the computer and turn off the work phone from time to time. Use vacations as an opportunity to refresh your mind and body, but don’t throw your diet and exercise plan out the window

Find a new running route

Whether you’re at the beach, in the mountains, or visiting the city, you can find new and great places to take your morning jog. The promise of new scenery can be very motivating when you are used to running along the same paths, trails, or roads. Take a run on the sandy beach before sunrise or brave the hilly mountainside. Take advantage of being in a new place and make it a fun adventure!

Plan activities that incorporate physical exercise

Every vacation spot has activities and excursions to offer. Try a biking or walking tour, take paddle-boarding lessons, or go on a hiking excursion. Not only will you be able to see all of the sights, but you can exercise while doing it! My husband and I went to Costa Rico for our honeymoon. We are both very outdoorsy so this was a perfect place for us to go. Some of the activities we did were a safari rafting tour, a hiking tour along the Arenal volcano, and white-water rafting. We saw all the sights that the rainforest had to offer and got a good workout too!

Refresh your body and mind

It is important to not only consider your physical health but your mental health as well. You cannot have a healthy body if you do not have a healthy mind. Vacations are a perfect time to clear your mind and forget about the stresses in your everyday life. I would recommend leaving your work computer and phone at home or turned off. Get lost in a new book or enjoy a day at the spa. Just try and leave your worries behind, be in the moment, and enjoy the calmness and the quiet.

Eat Healthy

On vacation, you will want to enjoy the sights and scenery of a new place as much as you want to enjoy the food and drinks it has to offer. Most vacations involve a lot more drinking and eating-out than you are used to on a regular basis. I would advise you to just be mindful of this and make healthy decisions each time you’re out. Just remember, you don’t want to have a hangover or be in a food coma the next morning and miss an entire day of vacation.

Have fun!

Most importantly, have fun on vacation! You will do yourself a lot of good by letting loose a little and not worrying as much about healthy eating and exercise. Personally, it is hard for me to unwind and I often don’t realize how stressed I am until I do let loose a little. Don’t beat yourself up for having too many drinks the night before or ordering that decadent dessert. We need cheat days every once in a while to be successful in the long-term on a healthy diet and exercise plan and vacations are the perfect chance for this.

Some pictures from Billy and I’s honeymoon in Costa Rica!!!
White-water rafting. This is a great upper body, back and core workout. We also got to see crocodiles, monkeys and lizard, oh my!

Re-fueling after white-water rafting with some freshly picked watermelon, papaya, and pineapple! I am a happy girl.

We went zip-lining in the cloud forest. This was a fun and adventurous way to see the rainforest.
